McFly Interview with AXm Mag (gay lads mag)

With new album Radio:ACTIVE, and their own new record label, is this McFly’s big boom? We round them up for a photo feature and get them talking filth.

You’ve left your old record company, Island? Were you dropped?
Harry: No, we were in between contracts, so we had the opportunity to leave. We were happy at Island but we’d been talking about doing it independently, and we thought fuck it. We decided we should invest in our own company.
Tom: The opportunity came at the perfect time really. We were just about to start recording the new album and we had enough money to fund it ourselves.
Danny: So we thought screw it, lets do it.
H: We never wanted to do our Greatest Hits but that’s the kind of thing you have to do with a major label. It’s just milking it.
Is it going to be a big change musically? Is this the goth phase?
H: It’s not a drastic change. They just happen to be by far the best songs we’ve ever done. There were no limits. We’re still doing pop songs, but our own way.
Is there any change now in anything that you couldn’t do before. Like, can you swear more in the studio?
D: Not really, we’ve always had a sort of a cleanish image. All we do is drink, have a few cigs every now and again, and that’s it! (Laughs)
What do you think you’ll miss most about being with a major label?
Dougie: I’ll miss the being looked after by Universal records… sounds cool, but it also sounds cool saying you got your own record label.
D: Nicking CDs… and this really hot girl called Sarah. She was hot, she was our marketing woman.
H: Not having to worry about decisions, so you won’t be able to blame it on anyone now, you’ll be blaming yourselves, that’s one thing I will miss.
Talking about making decisions, whose decision was it to strip naked at G-A-Y?
H: (Laughs) Well… I think that might have been the first time we did G-A-Y, and our single was out that week. Jeremy Joseph, who runs it, is a really cool guy and we were having drinks with him backstage before we went on and we said to him, ‘if we’re number one, we’ll fucking run naked!’
Did you have any second thoughts about doing it – like ‘this is going to come back to haunt us.’
D: I just say ‘I’ll do it if you do it!’ But we just do it for a laugh.
Who’s the most eager to get naked at every opportunity?
H: Er… Dougie probably. Or maybe Danny. All of us really. There’s a lot of ball action – people are always getting their balls out!
And doing what?
H: Just standing there behind our mates.
Ye-es?
H: And then you go over and someone’s got their balls out. But Dougie is the one we can always persuade to get naked.
Ever got in trouble anywhere for that?
H: We once whispered to Dougie in a hotel ‘Yeah get naked!’ and he did, we all did, and then we went back to the room and shut the door so he couldn’t get in. So he’s standing there outside the door naked and there were people walking past, who were just watching him for ages. It was funny. Luckily we’ve never been done for indecent exposure.
Dougie, ever felt the rest of the band is laughing behind your back?
Do: I hope it’s more of an in joke with us.
Do you guys go on group holidays?
H: Yeah, we went to Barbados together last year… There was some nakedness there actually! We met these two couples and we all just got naked and ran into the sea. We were just jumping off the pier and stuff like that.
T: We’ve been to Australia together – we’ve all been a lot of places together really.
Any crazy moments which stick out?
T: Our first day in Australia was mental. We landed at nine in the morning. We found this bar where they did beer by the litre, so we had a couple there and ended up getting kicked out. But there was a whole street of bars, so went to the next one, had a couple of beers there, and then got thrown out. We ended up being thrown out of all these bars and then slapped by a bouncer!
